Matcha Whisk Stand (kusenaoshi)

The kusenaoshi holds the chasen in its natural curved position when not in use. Storing a bamboo whisk flat collapses the prongs over time, which reduces froth quality and shortens the whisk's life. A small addition to the ritual — with a real effect on results.

What Is a Matcha Whisk Stand?

The kusenaoshi is the ceramic stand used to store a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) between uses. After rinsing the whisk, you place it upright on the stand rather than setting it flat. This maintains the natural curved position of the prongs and allows them to dry correctly — preventing the flattening and splaying that happens when a chasen is stored incorrectly.

Why Proper Whisk Storage Matters

The 100 fine prongs of a chasen are what produce the smooth, stable froth that well-made matcha requires. When those prongs lose their shape, the whisk loses its ability to emulsify properly. The visible effects are:

  • Coarser, less stable froth
  • More clumping and uneven mixing
  • A noticeably worse texture in the finished drink
  • Faster physical deterioration of the prongs themselves

A quality 100-prong chasen can last months of daily use with correct care. Without a stand, the same whisk degrades significantly faster — and the quality of every preparation degrades with it.

How to Use the Whisk Stand

After every use, rinse the chasen under warm running water immediately — never use soap or a dishwasher. Then place it upright on the kusenaoshi with the prongs facing down, so the natural curve of the tips is preserved as the bamboo dries. That is the entire process. The stand does the rest.

The Kusenaoshi in Japanese Tea Tradition

In formal Japanese tea ceremony, care of the whisk has always been considered part of the practice itself. The kusenaoshi reflects that orientation: the tools are not disposable, and maintaining them correctly is part of what makes the ritual work. The whisk stand is a direct descendant of that tradition — its purpose unchanged, its form simplified for everyday use.

Available as Part of the Japanese Matcha Tea Set

The ceramic whisk stand is included with the Japanese Matcha Tea Set — the four-piece kit that also contains the bamboo whisk, bamboo scoop, and ceramic bowl. It is also available separately here for those who already own a chasen and want to extend its life. My Infusa stocks all accessories and matcha grades locally in Malta, with fast delivery across the island.
